Skjoldehamn Tablet Woven Band

This wonderful geometric pattern is inspired by the ornate, tablet woven ankle bindings worn by a well dressed person buried in a bog in Andøya, Norway. This Late Viking Age grave find is well known for the near immaculate preservation of the textiles items due to the anaerobic conditions of the burial site, like the Skjoldehamn Hood!

Dated to the 10 - 11th Century, this band is 204 cm (6' 6") in length and 2 cm (4/5") wide. It is handwoven with 100% plant dyed* wool and would make an excellent cloth belt, ankle bindings or trim for your Late Viking Age and Early Medieval re-enactment. This design features colours produced madder (salmon red), dandelion flowers (yellow), and onion skins overdyed with a weak indigo solution (green).

*Plant dyed wool is beautiful but will require special care to maintain vibrancy and colour fastness. All tablet woven wares are wet finished by Knarr Traders prior to sale to prevent shrinkage, set twist and avoid colour bleeding. Refrain from regular washing. If washing is required, soak in cold water. Do not agitate, scrub or wring wet wool. Dry flat in shaded area. Avoid direct sunlight for prolonged periods.
