Finnish Iron Age Tablet Woven Band

Kekomäki (Grave 1B) Tablet Woven Band
800 - 1300 CE

This wonderful pattern is based on one of the many textile fragments recovered from Grave 1 of the Kekomäki burial site in Kaukola, in the historical province of Finnish Karelia. Dated to the Late Iron Age, this tomb contains the remains of two men and two women from the Finnish Iron Age. The lesser known sister band to the popular SZ pattern, aka Kekomäki (Grave 1A), this pattern features a repeating ladder design woven in 100% plant dyed* wool.

This band is 220 cm (7' 3") in length and 2 cm (4/5") wide. It is handwoven with 100% plant dyed* wool and would make an excellent cloth belt or trim for your Finnish Iron Age garments. This design features colours produced with onion skins over dyed with weld (sunflower yellow) and indigo (denim blue).

*Plant dyed wool is beautiful but will require special care to maintain vibrancy and colour fastness. All tablet woven wares are wet finished by Knarr Traders prior to sale to prevent shrinkage, set twist and avoid colour bleeding. Refrain from regular washing. If washing is required, soak in cold water. Do not agitate, scrub or wring wet wool. Dry flat in shaded area. Avoid direct sunlight for prolonged periods.
